Welcome!

Welcome to The Medical Imaging Educator - a new blog focusing on the practice, pedagogy, and current state of medical imaging. My name is Daniel DeMaio. I am the director of the Radiologic Technology Program at the University of Hartford. I hope to use this forum to explore current topics in medical imaging - particularly those in the modalities of Radiography, CT, and MRI. The main goal is to provide a resource for imaging educators and practitioners to share ideas, protocols, best practices, and other musings about our profession and healthcare in general. I hope that you will find the information interesting and informative. More importantly, I sincerely hope that you will share your knowledge and experiences in an effort to broaden all of our perspectives in ways that can positively impact the most important component of our chosen profession - our patients.

Earlier this evening I was reviewing one of my favorite sites for current imaging information, auntminnie.com. A discussion in the Technologists forum linked to a disturbing article out of Great Britain that described an incident where a tech. inadvertently administered barium into a patient's blood stream, resulting in the patient's death. Apparently this occurred during a barium enema through an obviously misplaced enema tip. The details can be found here. A very sad story in which the radiographer ultimately takes their own life due to extreme remorse. I plan on sharing the basic premise of this article with our students as a reminder of the need for precision and care in all of our patient interactions. Not a very uplifting story certainly, but one that I hope you'll share with others as a precaution. I promise to try to keep things a bit lighter in future posts.

Thanks for reading!
